About OffGridOwl

OffGridOwl helps people choose and use portable power without the guesswork. We build free calculators and write plain-English guides on power stations, solar panels and home backup, so you can buy the right size the first time and get the most out of what you already own.

Why this site exists

Shopping for a power station means comparing watt-hours, surge ratings, solar input voltages and battery chemistries, often explained badly or only by the companies selling them. We wanted one place that does the maths for you, shows its working, and gives straight answers like “yes, this will run your fridge for about 17 hours”.

Who runs OffGridOwl

OffGridOwl is built and run by Salman Munir, a web developer with a degree in Information Technology and years of experience building calculators and online tools. Every calculator on the site is coded by hand and tested against worked examples before it goes live.

How we research and write

  • Sources: we base figures on manufacturer specification sheets and user manuals, public data such as NREL solar resource data, and standard electrical formulas.
  • Assumptions shown: every calculator and guide states the efficiency, buffer and appliance figures it uses, so you can adjust them to your situation.
  • Kept up to date: we review and update guides when new models launch or prices and specs change.
  • Independent: brands do not pay to be included or to change our recommendations.

How the site is funded

OffGridOwl is free to use. We earn money from display advertising and, on some pages, affiliate links: if you buy a product after clicking one, we may earn a small commission at no extra cost to you. This never affects which products we recommend. Read our full affiliate disclosure.

A note on safety

Our guides are for general information. For anything that connects to your home’s wiring, such as transfer switches, permanent solar or electrical panels, always use a licensed electrician.
